About the Test
Resting Metabolic Rate (RMR) is the number of calories required each day to maintain basic functioning such as heartbeat, breathing, temperature regulation, and brain activity. RMR is influenced by age, body fat, sex, diet, exercise, genetics, hormones, and more, making it unique to every individual.
Using indirect calorimetry, the RMR test measures how many calories your body burns performing these basic functions each day. Whether your goal is to lose, gain, or maintain weight, this information is critical for designing a personalized and effective weight management program. Fitnescity’s nationwide network of test partners and personalized digital dashboard is a great place to start.
What is Tested:
- Resting Energy Expenditure (REE)
- Respiration Exchange Ratio (RER)
Individual location results may vary.

Fitnescity offers DEXA, RMR, and VO2 Max tests.
The DEXA Scan is widely regarded as being one of the most proven and reliable technologies for measuring body composition. A standard DEXA Scan with Fitnescity involves lying still on the DEXA scanner for about 15 minutes while the machine’s arm moves back and forth to develop a full body image. The DEXA scan can be used to obtain an initial body composition assessment and to understand how your body is changing over time.
The VO2 Max Test measures the maximum amount of oxygen your body is able to uptake during exercise and is considered the gold standard of assessing cardiovascular fitness. A standard VO2 Max test with Fitnescity involves wearing a respiratory mask connected to an indirect calorimetric metabolic cart and heart rate monitor while running or cycling at a progressively increasing speed or resistance until unable to continue. Measuring your VO2 Max can not only help gauge your level of cardiac fitness but improve the efficacy of training by more accurately determining training zones.
