About the Test

HBV is a viral infection that affects the liver. This test checks for the blood level of hepatitis B surface antibody (anti-HBs) to determine if a person has developed immunity against the hepatitis B virus. A positive test result indicates immunity against hepatitis B infection, either from vaccination or previous HBV infection. A negative test result indicates the absence of antibodies to Hepatitis B and no evidence of immunity.

The liver is a vital organ that performs multiple bodily functions, including filtering blood, fighting infections, storing vitamins and minerals, breaking down substances, and producing bile, which is required for digestion. Hepatitis means inflammation of the liver. When the liver gets inflamed or damaged, its ability to function is impaired. Hepatitis B is a specific type of liver infection caused by the Hepatitis B virus.¹

The Hepatitis B Titer Test determines the presence of hepatitis B surface antibody (anti-HBs) in the blood, which indicates immunity against HBV due to vaccination or previous infection. The hepatitis B surface antibody (anti-HBs) is the antibody produced in response to hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg), a protein present on the surface of the hepatitis B virus. This antibody appears after recovery from acute infection and may last for many years or for life after acute infection has been resolved. Anti-HBs can also be produced in response to hepatitis B vaccination.
