About the Test

The Common Respiratory Allergy Panel — Expanded measures immunoglobulin E (IgE) antibodies produced in the blood in response to certain common tree pollen, weed, grass, and common indoor allergens. This panel measures immune responses to weed and grasses (Bermuda grass, Timothy grass, Johnson grass, common ragweed, tough pigweed, sheep sorrel weed), tree pollen (maple, birch, mountain cedar, oak, elm, walnut, cottonwood, white ash, hickory/pecan, white mulberry), and indoor allergens (cat dander, dog dander, mouse urine, Cladosporium herbarum mold, Aspergillus fumigatus fungus, Alternaria alternata mold, cockroach, and dust mites Dermatophagoides pteronyssinus (American), and Dermatophagoides farinae (European).

With this allergy test, a blood sample is drawn and checked for the levels of antibodies your immune system produces in response to common indoor and outdoor allergens. It’s a quick, convenient way to test for multiple allergens at one time. There’s no need to stop any allergy medications you may currently be taking and because this is only a blood draw, there is no exposure to an allergen and therefore no risk of severe allergic reactions to an allergen, which is not the case with skin testing.

This test reports the presence of lgE(s) antibodies to tree pollen allergens, weed and grass allergens, and indoor allergens, but the result by itself cannot confirm the diagnosis of the allergy. It is important to follow up with your healthcare provider. They will review your results along with your medical history, signs and symptoms, medications, and any other test results. Only a healthcare provider can diagnose an allergy and prescribe medication, if needed.

An allergic reaction to common allergens can range from uncomfortable to severe. These symptoms usually develop within a few minutes to a few hours of being exposed. It is important to identify which allergens may trigger an allergic response. This panel may be helpful in identifying whether you have had or currently have an allergic reaction to common respiratory allergens. If you are experiencing any of the signs and symptoms listed in the Signs & Symptoms section below, this test may be for you.

This panel measures the level of IgE antibodies in your blood made by your immune system in response to the following common allergens:

IgE antibodies are normally found in small amounts in the blood, but larger amounts can be a sign that the body overreacts to allergens. This overreaction can cause your body to produce histamine and trigger an allergic reaction.

Allergies may be the cause of the following signs and symptoms, but you should discuss with your doctor to confirm. If you have any of the following, this test may be right for you:

Irritated eyes (swelling, redness, watering, scratchiness, and/or puffiness)
Congestion
Stuffy or runny nose
Itchy nose, ears, or mouth

Chest tightness
Shortness of breath/constriction and tightening of the airways
A swollen throat or the sensation of a lump in your throat that makes it difficult to breathe

Loss of consciousness

FAQs

If I test positive for one type of respiratory allergy, am I likely to be allergic to others?

In most cases, people are allergic to just one tree, weed, grass, or other single allergen of one type. However, if the proteins in one type are similar to those found in another, a cross-reaction may develop. For example, those with oak tree allergies may be at risk for developing reactions to other tree pollens due to cross-reactivity, such as birch tree pollen.

Does a positive result mean that I have an allergy?

The results of this test alone should not be used to determine if you have an allergy. It is important to follow up with your healthcare provider. Only a healthcare provider can diagnose or rule out an allergy and help determine next steps.
